Abstract

Tapioca starch-based bioplastic can be an alternative solution to overcome the environmental issue caused by commercial plastics because it is easy to decompose. Therefore, this research aimed to find out the effects of adding rice straw nano cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol on the characteristics of bioplastic film and to find out the composition of the best nano cellulose and PVA on the produced bioplastic film. The main ingredients of this bioplastic were tapioca starch and glycerol as the plasticizer. The composition variations of each nano cellulose filler and PVA (0,3, 0,6, 0.9, 1,2, 1,5 gram) were implemented then optimized in various composition of nano cellulose and PVA (1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 1:2, 1:3). The bioplastic analysis included tensile strength, elongation, and biodegradability. The results showed that the maximum tensile strength was 4,95 N/mm2 on the composition of 1,2 gram PVA and the elongation was 143,55% on the compositions of nano cellulose : PVA 1:3. Meanwhile, the maximum biodegradability was 23,08% on the composition of nano cellulose : PVA 1:2 in three days. Thus, it can be concluded that adding rice straw nano cellulose and PVA can improve the mechanical characteristic and the bioplastic biodegradability.
