Abstract

Dengue fever, a plague that happens quite often in Indonesia, is caused by the vector of Aedes Aegypti mosquitos that brings the virus. One of the ways to cut the transmission is by using chemical substances such as insecticide that could be from organophosphate (malathion) and pyrethroids (cypermethrin). The continuous use of insecticide can make the vector resistant to it. Therefore, this research aimed to discover the resistance status of Aedes aegypti mosquitos toward the malathion insecticide. This research was conducted from October 21st to November 15th,2022, in the Entomology Laboratorium of Health Research and Development Center Banjarnegara. This research method was the WHO Susceptibility test kit with the paper of malathion 0.8% insecticide and the samples of Aedes aegypti mosquitos. The test was done with 2 repetitions, and each repetition consisted of 1 control tube and 3 treatment tubes with malathion 0.8% insecticide paper and 20 mosquitos inside. The mosquitos in the treatment tubes were exposed to the malathion 0.8% insecticide paper for 1 hour. Then, they were moved to the storage tubes and rested for 24 hours. After 24 hours, the percentage of dead mosquitos was calculated. The results showed that the percentage of dead mosquitos after 24 hours of exposure was 100% from treatment tubes and 0% from control tubes. According to WHO (2016), if the percentage of mosquitos death was more than equal to 98%, it was categorized to susceptible. Hence, it could be concluded that the mosquitos were still susceptible to malathion 0.8% insecticide.
