Abstract

The main by-products of biodiesel production are glycerol, excess
methanol, alkaline catalysts and soap. It is estimated that the glycerol
produced is 10-15% of its production capacity with a purity level of around
40-50%. Conversion of glycerol into other products needs to be done to avoid
environmental problems. This problem has prompted researchers to conduct
research on purifying glycerol as a by-product of biodiesel production. This
study aims to investigate the effect of temperature and stirring time on the
purity of glycerol using the sulfuric acid acidification method. Stirring time
variables were 30,40,50,60 and 70 minutes while temperature variables were
40°C, 50°C, 60°C, 70°C and 80°C respectively. The best glycerol content
data results were achieved at a stirring time of 60 minutes with a temperature
of 60 °C with a content of (57.09%). The effect of temperature on glycerol
levels has a significant effect on the percentage of glycerol obtained. Based on
the research results obtained, the glycerol levels obtained did not meet the
standard parameters, so it is hoped that this can be used as a reference for
further research to increase the purity of the glycerol obtained by using the
adsorb method. Other research that is also needed is regarding the purification
of potassium salts which are a by-product in the purification of glycerol.
