Abstract

This survey study investigates the students' anxiety about speaking English. It involved 18 fifth-semester students of the English Education Department at the Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. Distributed through Google Forms, its primary collected data instrument was a closed questionnaire which consisted of 15 statements and which was adapted from the final version of the Public Speaking Class Anxiety Scale (PSCAS) (Yaikhong & Usaha, 2012). The results of the quantitative analyses indicated that the students experienced anxiety when speaking in English (70.2%). The results illustrated that students deemed internal and external factors to have influenced their speaking anxiety. In terms of the internal factors, fear of making mistakes (82.2%) was the most influential factor causing student anxiety, while lack of motivation (46.6%) was the lowest factor. Regarding the external factors, lack of preparation (82.2%) was the most influential factor causing student anxiety. Lack of vocabulary (56.6%) was the lowest factor that caused anxiety in students speaking English. This study deemed that teachers' demanding classroom activities and students' beliefs their own speaking competencies may have affected their anxiety as well. With reference to the result of this study, lecturers should be aware of the factors causing students' speaking anxiety as it will affect their understanding and speaking performance.
