Abstract
This study aimed to determine and describe the pattern, function, and meaning of batik motifs produced by Gunung Slamet Kauman Sokaraja, Banyumas Regency. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data for this research were 18 batik motifs produced by Gunung Slamet Kauman Sokaraja. The primary data source was the batik craftsmen. Secondary data sources were H. Makmum, the owner of the Gunung Slamet batik company and the name giver of types of batik Banyumas motif, Mrs. Nuralifah, and Mrs. Rusliyanti, the batik craftsmen at Mount Slamet. The researcher used three stages in conducting this study: data provision, data analysis, and presentation of data analysis results. Provision of data used proficient methods covering some basic techniques: observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the discussion of 18 types of batik motifs regarding the pattern, function, and meaning of the batik Banyumas motifs produced by Gunung Slamet Kauman Sokaraja showed that the pattern included: Geometric Lotus Flower, Kawung Beton, Kawung Jenggot, Puger Ayam, Babon Angrem, and Udan Liris. Non-geometric Kantil Flowers, Jae Srimpang, Hibiscus Flowers, Pring Sedapur, Cempaka Mulya, Godong Kosong, Lumbon, Kelalawar, Buketan Merak, Sungai Serayu, and Wijaya Kusuma. The function of this batik motif could be divided into 3, namely (1) the personal function of batik motifs was used for clothing that was made feminine, for example, for dresses that could be made into simple skirts. In addition, it was used for dancer dress code and accessories such as headbands; (2) The social function of batik motifs indicated the use of which in traditional Javanese cultural rituals. Moreover, it was also used to meditate or undergo acts of abstinence (laku tirakat). Batik motifs have a social function to teach people to remain istiqomah (consistent) in their lives, and (3) The physical function of batik motifs has an aesthetic value contained in the ornaments. Moreover, it was used in everyday life, since it has flexible motifs, can be used by anyone, and can be used in any situation. The meanings of the batik motifs are (1) Ayam Puger (strength and courage), (2) Babon Angrem (affection and patience), (3) Kantil flowers (eternal love), (4) Lotus flowers (love and life), (5) Cempaka Mulya (happiness and hope), (6) Gemek Setekem (independence), (7) Godong kosong (devotion and eternity), 8. Jae srimpang (charisma), (9) Kawung Beton (fertility), ( 10) Kawung Jenggot (teachings about life), (11) Kelalawar (air gun), (12) Kembang sepatu (beauty and independence), (13) Lumbon (bird or animal), (14) Merak Buketan (expected result ), (15) Pring sedapur (harmony and togetherness), (16) Sungai Serayu (life), (17) Udan Liris (fertility), and (18) Wijaya Kusuma (glory).
