Abstract

The background of this research is that understanding mathematical concepts plays an
important role in learning mathematics and can be improved through students learning
independence. This research aimed to describe the ability to understand mathematical
concepts based on the students learning independence in grade XII MIPA at SMA Diponegoro
Sampang. This was descriptive qualitative research. The samples were obtained using the
purposive sampling technique by taking 9 samples which were categorized into high, medium,
and low learning independence. The data collection instruments were questionnaires about
learning independence, tests about the ability to understand mathematical concepts, and
interviews. A validation test was carried out in this research using the triangulation technique.
The research results indicated that students with high leaming independence could understand
mathematical concepts at 87%. Meanwhile, students with moderate learning independence
had a moderate ability to understand mathematical concepts at 72%. On the other hand,
students with low learning independence had a low ability to understand mathematical
concepts at 43%
