This study aimed for finding out correlation between self-confidence and speaking
achievement of the second grade students in one of Islamic based Junior High
Schools in Cilacap. The data of the research were collected from 48 students of
the second grade in one of Islamic based Junior High Schools in Cilacap at
February. Self-confidence questionnaire and speaking test were used in collecting
the data. The result of students’ self
-confidence and speaking achievement
included high and good category with the average 78.67 for self-confidence and
67.83 for speaking achievement. From the aspects of speaking assessment, the
most students had better vocabulary than other aspects. Then, the result of
students’ self
-confidence category, there were two self-confidence categories;
they are fair and high. Meanwhile, students’ speaking achievem
ent was divided
into three categories; they are fair, good, and very good. Then, the result of
product moment correlation or r computation was 0.416 and r table was 0.284 in
level of significance 5 %. The result of r computation was higher than r table
(0.416 > 0.284). It could be concluded that there was a positive significance
correlation between students’ self confidence and their speaking achievement of
the second grade students in one of Islamic based Junior High Schools in Cilacap
while the hypothesis of the study was accepted.
