Abstract

Ecotourism is a form of tour to natural areas carried out to conserve the environment and preserve the life and welfare of local residents. This study aimed to determine the institutional capacity of Sambirata Village, including the capacity of community organizations and individuals in developing community-based ecotourism. This study used a survey method by collecting the data directly in the field through interviews and observations using a questionnaire. The data needed consisted of the capacity of community organizations, including organizational structure and coordination, external partnerships, development of ecotourism attractions, provision of facilities and infrastructure, promotion of ecotourism, and environmental conservation efforts. The individual capacity of the community included pioneering ecotourism potential, knowledge and understanding of ecotourism principles, management of tourist attractions, services to tourists, and the education level of the community. The population in this study was 223 people. The samples were 44 people, consisting of 24 people who were selected using the Total Sampling technique, and the other 20 were selected using the Purposive Area Sampling technique. They were village officials, Pokdarwis administrators, and communities involved in ecotourism and 10% of the total community around ecotourism with a radius of approximately 100 meters, respectively. The data display included frequency, percentage, and scoring tables. Then, the data analysis was classified into 3 classes: low, medium, and high. The result showed that the capacity of community organizations to develop community-based ecotourism was in the medium category (94.44%). Meanwhile, the capacity of individual communities to develop community-based ecotourism was in a low category (73.08%).
