Abstract

Bahari, Tegar Kusuma, 1709010029. 2022: Naofumi Iwatani's Psychological
Aspects in Aneko Yusagi's Novel The Rising of the Shield Hero. Undergraduate
thesis for Sarjana Sastra Degree, English Department, Faculty of Cultural Science
and Communication, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
This study aims to point out the aspects of psychology carried out by Naofumi
Iwatani in Aneko Yusagi's novel The Rising of the Shield Hero. The study applies the
psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud. The study's outcome would contribute
to the study of literary works in psychological research studies, especially
psychoanalysis in literary works.
The study's primary data source is The Rising of the Shield Hero. The method of
collecting data uses in-depth reading done by selecting the information from the
novel that correlates with the problem of the study. The primary data are
quotations such as paragraphs, words, narration, or text from the main character,
Naofumi Iwatani. The data is analyzed using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis
theory.
As a result, Naofumi Iwatani's psychological aspects show that his id is more
potent than his ego and Superego. However, the ego of Naofumi can fulfil his id
but not perfectly controls it. At the same time, the Superego is overwhelmed by
the id's force, making it unable to control Naofumi's id due to Myne's betrayal. The
other factors that influence Naofumi's psychological condition are self-fulfilment,
social factors, religious factors, and psychosocial factors from the Kingdom of
Melromarc.
