This study aims to (1) describe the variation of single sentence construction in the narrative essay of ninth-graders of SMP Negeri 5 Pemalang, (2) describe the variation of compound sentence construction in the narrative essay of ninth-graders of SMP Negeri 5 Pemalang. This is qualitative descriptive research. An alternative sentence structure is the focus of this study. The object of this study is the narrative essay of ninth-graders of SMP Negeri 5 Pemalang. Sentences in the narrative essay by ninth-graders at SMP Negeri 5 Pemalang were used as the data sources. The ninth-graders narrative essays totaling 27 narratives served as the data source. The reading technique is used to gather data. The distributional method was analyzed in the study. The distributional, identity, substitution, and backward methods are examples of advanced techniques employed. The findings of this study show that there are 16 different constructions for a single sentence in the narrative essay of ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 5 Pemalang. S-P, S-P-O, S-P-adv, S-P-Pel, S-Adv-P, S-P-O-adv, S-P-O-Pel, S-P-P-Pel-adv, S-P-Adv-adv, Adv-S-P, Adv-P-O-adv, Adv-P-P-Adv-adv, Adv. Compound sentence construction consists of compound sentences and compound-complex sentences. Compound sentences consist of compound sentences with the same subject, compound sentences with the same predicate and subject, compound sentences with the same adverb, compound sentences with the same subject, compound sentences with the same predicate and adverb, and compound sentences without any similar element. Complex compound sentences consist of compound sentences of extension of functioning elements which include the extension of the object's function and the extension of the element of the function of the adverbs. Complex compound sentences combine a single sentence consisting of compound sentences with the construction S-P-CONJ-P-P-O, S-P-Adv-CONJ-S-P, S-P-ADV-CONJ-S-P-O, S-P-P-P-Pel-Con-Con-P-P-O, Adv-P-P-Con-Con-P-P, and Adv-P-P-Con-Con-P-O.
