Abstract

Artifacts are tangible evidence of historical heritage. This study aimed to observe the history, geography, and condition of historical sites in Brebes based on the research problems and objectives. The study was carried out through the historical method, which analyzed past events. The stages of study used the historical method; 1. Heuristics (finding and collecting sources). 2. Criticism is divided into two; internal criticism (criticism of source credibility) and external criticism (criticism of source authenticity). 3. Interpretation (interpreting and compiling data). 4. Historiography (writing history). The results revealed that the history, geography, and condition of historic sites in Brebes were in three sub-districts: Bumiayu, Tonjong, and Paguyangan. There were historical sites in Bumiayu called as Watu Jaran temple, Tonjong was Gagang Golok temple, and Paguyangan was Pangkuan temple and the Arca temple. Out of the four sites, only the Watu Jaran temple site had been renovated by the village with local funding, and maintenance was carried out without the assistance of the local government. The local government's role was crucial in site maintenance, especially regarding facilities and financing. The condition of the existing site was still very neglected and damaged, and there were some missing collections. Regardless of its condition, this site is a Hindu relic because a collection of phallus, yoni, andini ox statues, and dwarapala statues were found. This renovated historic site can be used for tourism and as a source of knowledge.
