Abstract

This research aims to describe the application of cooperative principle in the
YouTube version of a television show broadcasted by Metro TV entitled IM_Possible
especially from October-December 2019. This was qualitative descriptive research.
The research data were the utterances of the performers in IM_Possible from
October-December 2019. This research was conducted in three stages, namely the
data provision stage, the data analysis stage, and the data presentation stage. At the
data provision stage, the observation method was used with the noting technique.
While at the data analysis stage, the comparative method was employed by dividing
the key-factors technique and equalizing technique. In this research, a number of
utterances were found in accordance with the cooperative principle. The results of
this study indicated that there were 38 utterances in accordance with the cooperative
principle, including maxim of quantity (17 utterances), the maxim of quality (one
utterance), the maxim of relevance (18 utterances), and maxim of manner(two
utterances). Meanwhile, there were 14 utterances that were not in accordance with
the cooperative principle, including maxim of quantity (six utterances), maxim of
quality (three utterances), maxim of relevance (five utterances), and maxim of
manner(zero utterance). Of the four maxims, the maxim of relevance had the most
conformity to the cooperative principle (18 utterances).
