Abstract

The possibility of errors made by Indonesian is high, as the status of English in this country is foreign language. Error made by people can give impact to their communication. One of the errors that can be made is dealing with pronunciation. While pronouncing, people pronounce word that is formed by vowel and consonants, once they mispronounce the sounds the idea will not be delivered well. Aims of this research are to identify the most difficult diphthong to be pronounced and the factor influence students‟ difficulties in pronouncing diphthongs at English Language Teaching (ELT) Department, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. The population of this research was ELT Department students from 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th semester academic year 2019/2020, and the respondents were taken 20 from the population. The data was gained through test in the form of audio recording and interview. The test was conducted to find out the most difficult diphthong to be pronounced and the interview was conducted to find out the factor influence students‟ difficulties in pronouncing diphthongs. The major findings of this research are 1) the most difficult diphthong to be pronounced was /әυ/ with 98.9 average point error made by the students with 184 times of error were made by the respondents. 2) There are three factors influence students‟ difficulties in pronouncing diphthong, they are ear training, language interference, and language internal system.
