Abstract

This study aims to determine the effects of weed control methods on the growth and yield of two maize varieties. The study used a two-factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The first factor is corn varieties consisting of Bisi 18 (V1) and Sumo NK7328 (V2), the second factor is weed control methods consisting of: without weed control (G0), mulching plant litter (G1), applying contact herbicides (G2), applied a systemic herbicide (G3). The research was conducted from October 2021 to December 2021 at the Experimental Garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. The results showed that the varietal treatment had a significant effect on leaf area, the number of cobs, the weight of loose cobs, and the weight of shelled seeds with the best results on the Sumo NK7328 variety. Weed control methods had a significant effect on leaf area and percentage of weed cover with the lowest percentage on the herbicides paraquat (Gramaxone) and glyphosate (RoundUp). The percentage of weed cover was significantly affected by the interaction between weed control strategies and corn types; both different types that were administered with synthetic herbicides were more successful in reducing the percentage of weed cover. Corn types treated with the herbicide paraquat (Gramoxone), namely V1G2 and V2G2, showed 23.5 % and 11.25 % weed cover, respectively, whereas those treated with glyphosate (RoundUp), namely V1G3 and V2G3, showed 18 % and 17.25 % weed cover.
