Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to find out the effectiveness of drilling technique to teach vocabulary of first grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbang at the academic year 2014/2015. This research was experimental research. 38 students of VII A were assigned to the experimental class where drilling technique implemented and 38 students of VII B to the control class was tough by conventional technique. in collecting the data, pre-test and post-test were used to find out the effect of the treatment that given to experiment that given to experimental class and control class. 20 items for pre-test and the post-test were made to measure students‟ vocabulary ability. In analyzing data, t-test was used to obtain the result of the treatment. Based on the experiment and control class score, it could be seen that the average score in experiment class is higher that the average score control class ( 71.4> 62.9). The mean of deviation in experiment class is 21.3 and control class is 11.8. The sum of the result of t-test is 3.376. The writer consult the result to test at the level of significance 0.05 with df (degree of freedom) 74. The value of t-table is 1.99 in df 74. So, the result of t-test is higher than t-table (3.376 > 1.99). It mean that the hypothesis is accepted and the writer concluded that teaching vocabulary through drilling technique is effective.
