Abstract

Writing cursive letters for a part of students is very troublesome, because they must write without lifting the writing tools. Students in the higher grades should be able to produce cursive writings well, because they had already learnt it since they were in the lower grade, when they began to learn how to write. This research aimed to discover fourth grade students' ability in writing cursive letters, to figure out the obstacles that affected the students so that they were unable to write cursive letters, and to find out the solutions taken by the school to solve the problems. This research was a qualitative study case. The participants were the school principal, the teacher, and fourth grade students. Techniques employed to collect the research data were observation, interview, documentation, and note taking. Then the data obtained were analyzed through source and technique triangulation. Based on the results of the study showed that the ability of students to write cursive letters was still lack, judging from the writing of students' writing using continuous upscale, the letters are large and irregular, the letters are less complete, students still have difficulty writing some letters, B, D, M. L, P, S And T. The obstacle of writing cursive letter in the school was first, students lack interesting to write with wtiring cursive letter. second, students never used it, because they usually writing with their usual style of writing. third, students less of confidence to use writing cursive letter. The solution that have to be solved by the school was by giving the writing tasks for the students to use writing cursive letter in their writing tasks, ask the students to make a summary and make an additional time to learn in the learning process. Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the students' ability of using writing cursive letter was less. It can be seen from the product of students' writing that less tight, the use of letters were not exist in standardized of the letters, they write incompletely. Often they removed some letters in a sentence. It was difficult for the students to write some letter such as B, D, M, L, T, P, S and T.
