Abstract

Background: ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) is a free radical molecule that
contains oxygen and has a high reactivity in damaging cells. An example is
ultraviolet light that attacks parts of the body in the form of skin. The effects that
occur starting from skin redness, pigmentation, can even cause DNA damage that
results in cell proliferation and if it takes place continuously will cause the
formation of skin cancer. Curcuma mango Val ethanol extract contains
polyphenol compounds in the form of flavonoids which have antioxidant benefits.
Methode: antioxidant activity testing was carried out with 3 methods is BCB (β-
Caroten Bleaching), FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) and DPPH (2,2-
diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) while for photoprotective effects using SPF values.
Results: in the DPPH method the sample showed very strong antioxidant activity
with an average IC50 value of 5.763 ± 0.012 μg / ml. In the FRAP method the
antioxidant activity of ethanol extract is stronger than Vitamin C with an IC50
value of 13.586 ± 1.193 μg / mL. In the BCB method, ethanol extract showed
very weak activity with IC50 value of 430.466 μg / mL. The photoprotective
effect shown by the sample is classified as extra protection because the SPF value
obtained is 6.557 ± 0.012. Conclusion: Curcuma mangga Val ethanol extract
showed different antioxidant activity in each test method and the photoprotective
effect shown was classified as providing extra protection.
