Abstract

African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) is one of freshwater fish commodities having high economic value and can be kept in a high stocking density. In intensive aquaculture, it usually uses fish high stocking density. This reduces the water quality which then causes less optimal fish growth. Supporting materials such as Growth Promoter and immune stimulants are needed to increase the growth and the immunity of the African catfish through garlic (Allium sativum) powder. This research aims to determine the effect of garlic powder administration into feed on the increase of African catfishes growth and immunity as well as to determine the optimal dosage. It was conducted in August to September 2019 in Zoology Laboratory and Biofloc Pond Wet Laboratory of UMP. It used experimental method of completely randomized design with 3 treatments, 1 control, and 4 repetitions. The treatments were the administration of garlic (Allium sativum) powder into the feed in various dosages, P0 0 g/kg, P1 20 g/kg, P2 30 g/kg and P3 40 g/kg of feed. The observed parameters consisted of parameter of growth, in the form of weight and length growth, SGR, feed conversion, feed efficiency, and immunity, in the form of differential leukocytes (lymphocytes and monocytes) and hematocrit percentage. The supporting parameter consisted of water quality, including temperature, pH, and DO. Data were analyzed through ANOVA in the significance level of 95%, continued with DMRT test. Data on water quality were analyzed descriptively. The research result shows that the addition of garlic powder has a significant effect (P0.05) to the growth parameter (growth of weight and length), SGR, feed conversion, and feed efficiency, as well as lymphocytes and hematocrit percentage. However, the percentage of monocytes is not significantly different (P0.05). The optimal dosage, which is able to improve the non-specific immune response of African catfish, is 40 g/kg of feed. Based on this research, the administration of garlic powder through the feed is potentially used to increase the growth and non-specific immunity of African catfish cultivation.
