Abstract

One of the skills needed in the 21st century is the ability to think critically in mathematics. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to describe the mathematical critical thinking ability of students of SMP Negeri 1 Kalibagor based on parental care pattern on the material of solid figures with flat sides. The sampling technique used in this study was purposive sampling technique with a sample of 9 students, consisting of 3 students from the democratic parenting type, 3 students from the authoritarian parenting type, and 3 students from the permissive parenting type. Moreover, the validity test used was the triangulation technique which included test results and interviews. The results of this study showed that students with democratic parenting patterns had the ability to identify information, find ways, conclude, and evaluate. In contrast, students with authoritarian parenting pattern only had the ability to identify information and had not shown the ability to find ways, conclude and evaluate which was in line with students with Permissive parental care pattern who only had the ability to identify information, and had not shown the ability to find ways, conclude and evaluate.
