Abstract
Biodiesel is an alternative and renewable energy for diesel engines, because it is
renewable and environmentally friendly. Biodiesel can be produced from vegetable
oil or animal fat in the presence of alcohol and a catalyst.. Used cooking oil in this
study was taken from tempe mendoan traders because this food is typical of
Purwokerto, so it produces a lot of waste. This research is expected to find out the
effect of adding catalyst mass and process temperature in the transesterification
reaction used to produce optimal biodiesel according to SNI 7182-2015 biodiesel.
The research method of making biodiesel from used cooking oil is carried out by a
two-stage reaction process and the stages of purifying biodiesel from impurities.
The analysis result of free fatty acid used cooking oil before treatment was 6.67%
after esterification to 2.31%. From the analysis of biodiesel production with
variable KOH catalyst concentrations (0.5%;1%;1.5%;2%;and 2.5%) and the
temperature of the transesterification process (55, 60, 65, 70,and 75oC) at a ratio of
4:1 (oil:methanol), and the time constant is 60 minutes. The results showed that the
catalyst variable had a significant effect (p<0.05) on the quality of the biodiesel
produced and the temperature variable had a significant effect (<0.05) on the quality
of the biodiesel produced. The optimal biodiesel was produced at a KOH catalyst
concentration of 0.5% and a temperature of 55oC with a biodiesel yield of 86.62%,
an acid number of 0.6041 mg-KOH/g, a density of 907 kg/m3, and a viscosity of
9.915 CSt.
