Abstract

This research discusses about code switching and code mixing used by English teachers of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto on the teaching learning process. This research was aimed at finding out: (1) the types of code switching and code mixing used by the English teachers in EFL Classes (2) the dominant types of code switching and code mixing used by the English teachers in EFL Classes at SMA Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. This research focused on code-switching used by English teachers of SMA Muhammdadiyah 1 Purwokerto adopted from Poplack’s theory and code mixing adopted from Hoffman’s theory. The data then were analyzed using qualitative method. The researcher used observation and interview as the instruments to find out the valid data. The results of analysis showed that (1) the teachers used three types of code switching, namely: intra-sentential code switching, inter-sentential code switching, and tag switching. Meanwhile, the teachers used three types of code mixing, namely: intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing and involving a change of pronunciation. (2) The dominant type of code mixing was intra-sentential code mixing, while the dominant type of code switching was intra-sentential switching and inter-sentential switching.
