Abstract

This research was motivated by the students low reading comprehension skill and learning achievement on Social Science. This research aimed to improve the students reading comprehension skill and learning achievement on Social Science through Cooperative Integrated Reading And Composition (CIRC) learning model. This classroomaction research used Kemmis McTaggart (1982: 11) model and was conducted in two cycles with two meetings ineach cycle consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this research were 23 fifthgraders consisting of 11 female students and 12 male students. The data were collected using test and non-test.The test instruments included the assessment and written assessment of reading comprehension performance while the non-test instruments included observation sheet, interview, and documentation. The results showed thatthe percentage of students reading comprehension skill completeness in cycle I was59.56% with the criteria of fairand the percentage in cycle II was 83.84%with the criteria of very good. There was also an improvement on thestudents Social Science learning achievement that could be seen by their completeness percentage in cycle Iwhich was59.13% with the criteria of fair, and improved to 84.34% in cycle II with the criteria of very good. The results proved that the implementation of Cooperative Integrated Reading And Composition (CIRC) learning modelwas able to improve the students reading comprehension skill and learning achievement on Social Science in SDNegeri 3 Banteran, Sumbang Sub-district, Banyumas Regency.
