The research is entitled Types of Phrases in Descriptions Essay Written by
Students of Grade VII A at SMP N 5 Purbalingga in the academic year of 2019-2020;
it aims to describe the types of phrases in the description essay written by students.
The data source of this research is in the form of a description, totaling 32 essays. The
data were in the form of phrases in the descriptive essay of grade VII A students at
SMP N 5 Purbalingga, totaling 380 data. This type of research applied in this
research was descriptive qualitative. This study uses research methods and
techniques, namely the first method with technique of providing data using the
observation method with the technique of SBLC (non-participatory observation) and
note-taking technique. The two methods and techniques of data analysis used the
distributional method with the techniques of reverse, substitution, and inserting. The
three methods and techniques for presenting the result of analyzing data include
informal and formal presentation methods. The results of this study are the types of
phrases. Phrases are divided into two types. The first type of phrase is based on the
distribution by the elements. Types of phrases based on distribution consist of 231
data elements. The second type of phrase is based on the distribution by word
category. The types of phrases based on distribution with word categories totaling
149 data.
