Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out pronunciation problems and factors causing the problems. The research was carried out at SMP N 2 Kaligondang in Academic Year of 2015/2016. Total of 32 students of VII C participated in this research. A reading aloud testwas used to find out the students’ pronunciation problems. The results showed that most of the students had problem in their pronunciation with 24 (75%) students having problem in pronouncing /ᴂ/ sound, 18 (56%) students having problem in pronouncing /u:/ sound, 18 (56%) students having problem in pronouncing /ᵊ/ sound, 18 (56%) students having problem in pronouncing /aI/ sound, 24 (75%) students having problem in pronouncing /ᶱ/ sound, 31 (97%) students having problem in pronouncing /ᶞ/ sound, 21 (66%) students having problem in pronouncing /ᶴ/ sound, and 21 (66%) students having problem in pronouncing /tᶴ/ sound. The factors causing the problems were (1) sound system differences and (2) mother tongue interference. This is because most of the students have pronunciatin problem in some English sounds which do not exist in Indonesian sounds. Besides, Indonesian people are not accustomed to pronounce those sounds.
