Abstract

This research was aimed at revealing the factors contributing students’ speaking anxiety and finding out the most contributing factor of students’ speaking anxiety. The research belonged to survey. The participants of this study were 64 students of SMA N 1 Patikraja in the tenth grade in the academic year 2019/2020. The data were obtained from questionnaire and interview. The result of questionnaire was utilized to know the category of students’ speaking anxiety. Later, interview was used as the supportive data to know what factors contributing to students’ speaking anxiety. Based on the result, There were nine factors contributing students’ speaking anxiety, communication apprehension, test anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, lack of vocabulary, lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, fear of being laughed at by other students, lack of preparation and shyness. The most dominant factor contributing students’ speaking anxiety was lack of preparation. In which it was revealed 78%.
