This research was intended to describe the problems and to find the causes of
the problems in writing descriptive text faced by grade 10th students at SMK
Muhammadiyah Bobotsari. The methodology of this research was descriptive
quantitative. The population in this research was 363 students of grade 10th while the
sample that the researcher took was 36 students. The technique to get the sample was
random sampling. There were some instruments to collect the data, they were a test to
find out the problems, questionnaire, and interview to find out the causes why the
students faced those problems. After the data was collected, then the researcher
analyzed it one by one. In this case, the test data was also analyzed by a second inter
rater in order to avoid subjectivity in giving scores. The research showed that there
were five problems in writing descriptive text faced by grade 10th students at SMK
Muhammadiyah Bobotsari they were, organization, grammar, vocabulary, mechanic,
and content. In addition, the causes of students faced those problems were
grammatical weaknesses, knowledge and understanding, less practice, and
educational background.
