Abstract

The aims of this research were to reveal constraints faced by Vocational High School students, know the dominant constraint mostly faced by Vocational High School students and find out factors that influence the students in learning English. The method used in this research was descriptive with qualitative analysis. The subject of research was the eleventh grade students of Muhammadiyah Sampang Vocational High School. Random sampling Technique was used to select 48 students as the subject of this study. The researcher used questionnaire and interview to collect the data. The data taken from the questionnaire was calculated using percentage formula. While the data from the interview was described qualitatively. From the data analysis, the researcher found that the students‟ constraints in learning English faced by Eleventh Grade of Muhammadiyah Sampang Vocational High School are dealing with the inappropriate material and textbook, difficult to listen long recording and when the speaker is speaking too fast; students are afraid of making mistakes in pronunciation, afraid to be criticized and shy; students faced difficulty in using appropriate grammar and students difficulty when they have to match new vocabulary. Moreover, the most dominant constraint in English learning is learning listening skill. In addition, factors that cause constraints on the students‟ English learning process are lack of motivational support from parents, lack of facilities from parents who support learning English, teachers who do not meet the requirements, noisy and non-conducive school environment, lack of varied facilities from schools to support learning English, students feel uncomfortable feeling in classroom and support from the surrounding environment.
