Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the development of Wayang Suket (grass puppets) in Wlahar Village. This study was conducted by employing the historical approach, which investigated events that occurred in the past, in order to address the problem and research aims. The following are the steps of the research: 1. Heuristics (Stage of finding and collecting sources). 2. Criticism, which is separated into two types at this stage: external criticism (from the outside/authenticity of the source) and internal criticism (from the credibility/reliability side of the source). 3. Interpretation, which involves analyzing and compiling data. 4. Historiography refers to the process of writing history. The findings of this study show that the development of Wayang Suket in Wlahar Village is a Purbalingga Regency intangible cultural heritage. Mbah Gepuk of Bantarbarang Village started the tradition of making Wayang Suket, which is today continued by Badriyanto. Wayang suket is a grass-based Wayang sketch that resembles a leather puppet. According to Javanese belief, mattress grass only grows in the month of Sura (the first month of Javanese month). Wayang Suket initially appeared at an exhibition in Yogyakarta, where this puppet was recognized by many people. Badriyanto was inundated with orders, including Punakawan (Clowns) and five Pandawa. Wayang suket is only for display and collection. Depending on the difficulty of the puppets ordered, the process of manufacturing Wayang Suket takes two to four days. To build a Wayang Suket, soak the grass first to make the texture more flexible, then dry it in the sun and weave it according to the puppet needed to make. The government's efforts to preserve the Wayang Suket include educational instruction so that it does not perish with the flow of time. The Purulingga administration has taken steps such as holding a training session for 10 participants, including five from Wlahar village and five from SMA Negeri 1 Rembang students. Wayang Suket has now become a symbol of Purbalingga Regency, and is intended to be a typical Purbalingga Batik pattern.
