The research aims to study and analyze the implementation of the character
values of Pekuncen custom society, and the process of cultivating character
values of Pekuncen custom society. This research used a qualitative approach
with a case study method. The data were collected through observation,
interviews, documentation, and literature studies. The research subjects were
Pekuncen village head, customary leader, Banyumas cultural practitioners,
Banyumas historian, Civic Education teachers, and custom society figures. The
data were analyzed through the steps of data reduction, data display, and taking
the conclusion. The research result indicates that: First, Pekuncen custom
society's characters are still maintained and implemented through religious
character, which is a syncretism between the teachings of Islam and local belief
(kejawen) in the form of unggah-unggahan tradition. Discipline character also
colors the community tradition in the form of Bonokeling follower's adherence to
prevailing teaching and norms. Moreover, cooperated character (gotong royong)
is manifested in the form of mutual assistance to social activities. Second, the
process of cultivating characters is conducted in the family and community
through exemplary attitude, discipline attitude, habituation, and efforts to
preserve the custom.
