Abstract

This research was aimed to reveal the teaching strategy employed in TOEFL preparation course taught by the instructors of Language Development Center (LDC) Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP). A descriptive quantitative research with survey design was conducted to figure out the teaching strategies used, and to find out which strategy is mostly used. The teaching strategies are the ones grouped into traditional taxonomy: presentation, discovery, inquiry, and cooperative learning strategy. The subjects of this study were 19 instructors of LDC UMP. The data collected through questionnaire and interview showed that all strategies are used by the instructors of LDC in teaching the course. Discovery strategy is the most dominant strategy used by the instructors (79.30%). Inquiry strategy sits on the second position (63.16%). Presentation strategy positions as the third mostly used strategy (54.74%). Meanwhile, cooperative learning strategy ranks the last (48.95%).
