Abstract

It’s been four years since Donald Trump first became President of the United States and there has been a lot of controversy. This thesis discusses about Donald Trump’s tweets using Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis theory.
This research paper is aimed (1) to find out the CDA microstructure, (2) to know about the element of macrostructure, and (3) to found the social cognition contained in Donald Trump’s controversial tweets. The descriptive qualitative design was used to analyze the data.
As the result of the microstructure, show that Donald Trump uses irony to engage emotional attachment to the intended. Positive self-description also occurs in every argument that he presents, but researchers have also found that Trump tends to create a negative representation of groups or others to get the positive representations. According to this analysis, there are five types of CDA elements in the Donald Trump’s tweets. The first is Thematic consist of 1 classification. The second, Syntactic Style consist of 5 classifications, there are: Persuasion, Impression Management, Attribution, Cohesion, and Pronoun. The third, Semantic Styles consist of 2 classifications, there are: Background and Detail, Presupposition. The fourth, Stylistic Styles consist of 1 classification, there are: Lexical Choice. The last is Rhetoric Styles consist of 2 classification there are: Hyperbole, Repetition and Irony. Then, from the various of social cognition there are consist of: emotional attachment, mind control, mitigation evidence, glorification, creating enemy and rhetorical actions.
