Abstract

Background: Quinine extract has 4 alkaloids namely quinine, kuinidin, sinkonin and sinkonidin that have properties as hair growth stimulants. Quinine extract is then made cream preparations with a concentration of 20%. In order to be used as a hair growth stimulant cream, safety tests are required according to BPOM requirements. In this study the safety tests conducted were irritant tests with the aim of hypersensitivity reactions and dermal acute toxicity tests with the aim of obtaining an LD50 score. Method: The irritant test uses draize test by calculating the average amount of erythema and udema, while the dermal acute toxicity test there are two stages of test with each stage using 3 groups, namely the treatment group (quinine extract cream), negative group (base cream) and normal group (without treatment). In preliminary trials using 4 doses (50, 200, 1000, 2000mg/kgBB) administered dermally. While the main test uses a preliminary test dose that causes death and toxic symptoms. Result: Quinine extract creams get an average irritant score of 0.0 with a very mild/non-irritating category and have LD50 ≥ 2000mg/kgBB because in all groups of mice did not experience death as well as toxicity symptoms and clinical symptoms. Conclusion: Quinine extract cream does not irritate/ irritate very lightly and does not cause toxicity until the maximum dose is 2000mg/kgBB.
