Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the students’ presentation anxiety in the academic speaking course, the factors affecting students’ presentation anxiety, and how they handle their presentation anxiety. This study used a descriptive method with survey study that was taken from questionnaire, interview, and observation. The subject was the 4th semester students of English Education Department. From the 70 participants, five students were selected as the interviewee. The questionnaire was taken from FLCAS scale developed by Horwitz, Horwitz and Cope (1986). Based on the result of questionnaire, the average score of student anxiety existence was sometimes exist, which is 58.13. The factors affecting students’ presentation anxiety were internal and external factors. The internal factors are fear of making mistakes, lack of preparation, limited vocabulary, low self-confidence, and embarrassment while the external factors are classmates and lecturer. The students handle the anxiety by holding a thing, making physical movement, relaxing, and going to toilet.
