Abstract

Sugarcane (Saccharun officinarum) is a plant that is widely cultivated by farmers to produce sugar. Production of superior sugarcane seeds in one place needs to be sent from seed producers to other locations. One of the efficient sugarcane seed delivery techniques is to use single buds. Single bud sugarcane seeds have weaknesses, namely the easy percentage of germination and have a high level of contamination so that many experience death when shipped or stored within a certain period of time. One alternative that can be used to prevent a decrease in the percentage of sugarcane seed germination in the form of single buds is to soak the single buds in hot water treatment (HWT) for a certain time before the storage or shipping process. This study aims to determine the effect of soaking time and storage time on seed germination, fungal contamination and seed growth. Sugarcane seeds with single buds of Bululawang (BL) generation G1 produced by meristem culture were soaked in water with a temperature of 500C for 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 minutes. The seeds were then stored for 1 and 2 weeks and continued to be planted in polybags and maintained for 4 weeks to observe germination and seed growth. The results showed that sugarcane seeds were successfully stored for 1 week by being treated with soaking in water at a temperature of 500C for 10 to 40 minutes. The percentage of successful seed germination is still relatively high (50%) and the level of fungal contamination is relatively low 15% even after being stored for 1 week. This treatment did not result in any morphological changes in the planted seeds. All the seeds that successfully grew showed normal and healthy growth characteristics after being planted in the field for 4 weeks. However, sugarcane seeds were not successfully stored for 2 weeks even though they were treated by immersion in water at a temperature of 50 0C. All stored seeds die.
