Abstract

This research was aimed at knowing how teachers evaluate students’ speaking skill in junior high schools. This research used descriptive qualitative as the method. It produced the descriptive information in the form of written or oral symbol from the people and behavior which were being observed. In this research the researcher did the questionnaires and interview to get the descriptive information. This research involved ten English teachers of four schools in Lumbir sub district. Those schools were SMP Negeri 1 Lumbir, SMP Negeri 2 Lumbir, SMP PGRI Lumbir, MTS Ma’arif NU 1 Lumbir.The results of the data analysis explained that: 1). All of the teachers had known about the definition of speaking, the aspect of speaking skill and they had use rubric for evaluate students speaking skills. The aspect of speaking skill that they had evaluated were fluency aspect, grammar aspect, vocabulary aspect, pronunciation aspect and the last one comprehension aspect. But there were not teachers who evaluate all of the aspect of speaking skills. How they had evaluate this aspects by hearing their voice that appropriate or not in every aspect on rubric.2).The way of the teachers for evaluate students speaking skills that teacher had used were monologue, dialogue and multilogue. 3).The teacher also had give feed back to the students by discuss and share the students mistake that the teacher saw when the students spoke. The students’ mistakes were seeing in the aspect of the rubric.
