Abstract

Javanese society has a variety of diverse cultures, traditions, and arts. In addition, Javanese people are also known to have noble character and personalities, such as etiquette. However, recently some traditions have experienced a decline and even almost disappeared along with a decline in morals and character. Therefore, researchers are interested in studying the tradition of bobok bumbung and the nurture of character values in Pesanggrahan Village, Kroya Sub-district, Cilacap Regency. Bobok Bumbung is a rare and unique tradition containing character values. This study aimed to describe Pesanggrahan village, including geographical and demographical conditions, religion and beliefs, arts and traditions, socio-economic conditions of the community. In addition, it also aimed to reveal the origin and procession of the Bobok Bumbung tradition, the nurture of the characters contained in the Bobok Bumbung tradition and efforts to preserve it. This study used the historical method using heuristics method(steps to find and collect sources), criticism in the form of external criticism (criticism from the outside or the authenticity of the source) and internal criticism (criticism in the credibility of the source), interpretation (interpreting historical facts), and historiography as a step in writing history. The results of this study indicate that the bobok bumbung tradition is a tradition of saving money in bamboo which is prepared to pay the Land and Building Tax (PBB) which began to be revived in 2015 consisting of processions and various series of art events. Actually, this tradition has become an old habit of the Pesanggrahan village community, but it starts to be abandoned along with the times. Therefore, from 2015 until now, the tradition of bobok bumbung has annually been carried out due to its character values that are beneficial for life. Moreover, it is also held as a preservation action of this tradition. The character values contained in this tradition are frugal and careful characters known as Gemi, Nastiti and Ngati-ati in the Javanese language. In addition, the Bobok Bumbung tradition also teaches Javanese philosophy including Rukun Agawe Santosa Crah Agawe Bubrah (United we stand, divided we fall), Narima Ing Pandum (Be thankful of what you have), and Jer Basuki Mawa Beya.
