Abstract

This study aimed to describe the forms and meaning of Indonesian reduplication
in news discourse on the front page of Suara Merdeka of the February 2020
edition. The type of this study was descriptive qualitative research. Data in this
study were in the form of all 29 reduplications, 14 partial reduplications, two
reduplications combined with affixation processes, and two reduplications with
phoneme changes. The source of data was the front page of Suara Merdeka of the
February 2020 edition. This study was conducted using three stages; (1) data
provision where the researchers used the literary method with reading and notetaking
techniques. (2) data analysis where the researchers used the split and
referential equivalent methods. In the split method, researchers used Segmenting
immediate constituents technique (BUL) which has an advanced technique that is
the dressing technique. In the referential equivalent method, researchers used a
basic technique of Sort Specific Elements (PUP) which has an advanced
technique that is the Contact Appeal Equate technique (HBS). (3) Presentation of
analyzing data result, researchers presented all data with an informal method that
is presenting data in ordinary words. Based on the discussion of research results,
researchers concluded that reduplications consist of: (a) the entire reduplication
such as virus-virus, kelelawar-kelelawar, plastik-plastik, pintu-pintu, anak-anak,
persoalan-persoalan, Buru-buru, tokoh-tokoh, tahapan-tahapan, korban-korban,
nilai-nilai, perubahan-perubahan, keunggulan-keunggulan, orang-orang, namanama,
ibu-ibu, baru-baru, program-program, tahun-tahun, Produk-produk, soalsoal,
proyek-proyek, tebing-tebing, bibit-bibit, pesan-pesan, perempuanperempuan,
program-program, hak hak, awan-awan, (b) partial reduplication
such as bersiap-siap, terkatung-katung, sehari-hari, asal-asalan, mencari-cari,
berbincang-bincang, diolok-olok, bertanya-tanya, berjalan-jalan,bersantaisantai,
bertele-tele, bersama-sama, disebut-sebut (c) reduplications combined
with affixation process such as obat-obatan, akar-akarnya, sebaik- baiknya and
(d) reduplications with phoneme changes such as berlalu-lalang, mengotak-atik.
Then the meaning of reduplication found consists of: (a) to state large quantity,
(b) to state the changes in the basic form are repeated over again, (c) to state the
actions in a basic form carried out with ease, casually, or with pleasure, (d) to
state the actions in the basic form are carried out by two parties and mutually
related, (e) to state things related to the work are in basic form, (f) and to state
the highest level that can be achieved.
