Abstract

One of the problems faced by farmers in Indonesia is the occurrence of plant
diseases. The Rhizoctonia solani fungus is one of the pathogenic fungi that
causes blight or midrib disease in rice. This fungus causes considerable
losses, from the beginning of planting to harvest. According to Kimiharu et
al., (2004), R. solani mushrooms can reduce rice production by 20-35%.
General control measures are carried out by using synthetic fungicides.
However, long time application can cause adverse effects. Therefore, it is
necessary to do an alternative control which is cheaper and more
environmentally friendly, such as natural fungicides. One of the plants that
can be used as a natural fungicide is Curcuma xanthorriza L. which is
considered to have secondary metabolites that are anti-fungal. The purpose of
this study was to determine the effectiveness of Curcuma xanthorriza extract
against the pathogenic fungus R. solani as a substitute for synthetic
fungicides. The method used in this research is the Kirby Bauer disc
diffusion method. The concentrations of Curcuma xanthorriza extract used
were 6%, 8%, 10%, and 12%, DMSO as a negative control was carried out 3
times. The parameter observed was the area of the inhibition zone. The data
obtained were analyzed using the F test and continued with the Duncan-
Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results discovered that Curcuma
xanthorriza extract significantly inhibited the growth of R. solani. The
concentration of ginger extract at 12% resulted in the largest area of
inhibition zone, namely 44.2 mm2, but it was still classified as less effective.
