Abstract
Corn (Zea mays) is one of the food crops that becomes the basic needs of people instead of rice. National maize productivity from 2013 to 2016 was approximately 5.07 tons / ha. However, this productivity is still far from its potential that can reach 13 tons / ha. The low productivity is caused by many factors, including the attack of Helicoverpa armigera corn borer caterpillars. The losses caused by these pests can reach 80%. The control efforts have been carried out by farmers using synthetic pesticides. Although the use of synthetic pesticides is quite effective, it can cause negative impacts such as the emergence of resistance, pesticide residues that endanger consumers, and environmental pollution. One alternative way to control to be more environmentally friendly is to use plant-based pesticides from gadung extract (Dioscorea hispida Dennts). A study conducted by Utami & Haneda (2012) revealed that methanol extract of bitter yam at concentration of 1% could kill 95.56% of caterpillar larvae. This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of Asiatic bitter yam extract towards the mortality of cob borer caterpillars (H. armigera) on corn. The study was conducted in March - June 2019 at the FKIP Botany Laboratory and the Pharmacy Laboratory of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. The study was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design with 6 treatments namely extract concentrations of 1%, 2%, 3% and 4%, as well as negative controls (without treatment) and positive controls (Prevaton pesticides) with 4 replications. The extraction of bitter yam is conducted by using distilled water. The parameters observed were mortality of corncob borer caterpillars at the time of observation starting from 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours after treatment. The data obtained were analyzed using the F test, followed by the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at a 95% level. The findings reveal that bitter yam extract has a significant influence on H. armigera mortality. The highest mortality obtained at a concentration of 4% was 36.66%, far lower than the Prevaton pesticides which reached 88.33%. Therefore, the 4% concentration of bitter yam extract has not been effectively used as a vegetable pesticide as a substitute for synthetic pesticides to control corncob borer caterpillars
