Abstract
A Research has been conducted to determine the effect of chitosan on the characterization of PVA film hydrogels to analyze the properties and characteristics of film hydrogels formed as wound dressing. The composition of chitosan concentration was 0% to 15% and irradiated to obtain crosslinking hydrogels using gamma-ray radiation at a dose of 40 kGy. The measured characteristics included gel fraction, swelling ratio, mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation). The chemical structure was analyzed using Spectrophotometer Fourier Transform-Infra Red (FT-IR). And the shape of the hydrogel mophology was analyzed using Scanning Electrone Microscope (SEM). The research results showed that the gel fraction value decreases with increasing chitosan content from the value of 96.28% to 69.88% while the reverse swelling ratio increased from 180% to 576%. The hydrogel strength tends to decrease seen in the tensile strength value from 30 N / mm2 to 7.20 N / mm2 and percent elongation has a value of 480.57% to 224.79%. The results showed that the addition of chitosan content could increase the characteristics in the swelling ratio. Although only the swelling ratio increases but it is seen from the gel fraction, the tensile strength and elongation still meet the requirements for wound dressing at concentrations of PVA / Chitosan 3% to PVA / Chitosan 12% so that the PVA hydrogel / chitosan at that concentration can be used to wound dressing application.
