Abstract

Determining students‘ difficulty in reading is an important aspect because it can give valuable information for teachers about what kind of difficulty that students have. The purpose of this research was to find out students‘ difficulty, as well as to know in what aspects causing the difficulty in reading. The research was conducted by first giving a reading test to 249 students, giving questionnaires to 156 students, and interviewing 20 students of X grade at SMA N 1 Patikraja. The results of the research showed that the students‘ difficulties covered four (4) aspects of reading; namely vocabulary, understanding main ideas, finding the correct specific information, and understanding the text structure. The result also showed that finding the correct specific information was the most difficult aspect (27.3), followed by understanding main ideas (29.1), understanding the text structure (30.25), and then understanding vocabulary (41.99). Hopefully, all the findings could be used as good information for teachers to design a better reading strategy for classroom teaching and learning activities to overcome students‘ difficulty in reading.
