Abstract

This research aimed to describe the speech acts uttered by sellers and buyers during
the buying and selling process in Bumi Lestari Shop in Purwojati Market, Purwojati
Sub-district, Banyumas Regency. This research applied the descriptive qualitative
method. The data were in the form of utterances of sellers and buyers in Bumi Lestari
Shop. The researcher researched for ten days in one month, namely on 1st, 5th, 8th,
12th, 14th, 16th, 18th, 22nd, 25th, and 28th of March 2019. The data were collected
using the observation method with a tapping technique, uninvolved conversation
observation technique, recording technique, and note-taking technique. The data were
analyzed using the pragmatic identity method with the basic technique of Ultimate
Constituent Analysis and the advance technique of Same Interrelational Method.
Then, the data were presented using the informal method. Based on the results of the
analysis, it was revealed the following findings. Speech acts uttered by thesellers and
buyers in Bumi Lestari Shop were categorized in the directive illocutionary speech
acts. There were 6 types of directive illocutionary speech acts found here, namely
requestives, questions, requirements, prohibitives, permissives, and advisories. From
the 205 directive illocutionary speech acts collected in this research, there were (1) 49
utterances of requestives, (2) 94 utterances of questions, (3) 6 utterances of
requirements, (4) 5 utterances of prohibitives, and (6) 24 utterances of advisories.
Subsequently, it was concluded that the most dominant directive illocutionary speech
acts uttered by sellers and buyers in Bumi Lestari Shop in Purwojati Market was
questions as the sellers and buyers often ask questions during the buying and selling
process.
