Abstract

This research aims to describe illocutionary speech acts found in Anis Matta‟s speeches “Menyambut Ramadan” (Welcoming Ramadhan) and “Mengenang Taufik Ridlo” (Commemorating Taufik Ridlo). This research applies descriptive qualitative approach. Data of the research are 253 utterances in “Menyambut Ramadan” and 78 utterances in “Mengenang Taufik Ridlo”. This research applied observation method with tapping, recording, and writing techniques. The method used in data analysis is pragmatic-comparing method. Meanwhile, informal method in used to present the analysis results. The results of the research classify three marco-classes of illocutionary speech acts such as representatives, directives, and expressives. In “Menyambut Ramadan”, there are 193 representatives, 30 directives, and 13 expressives. Adding to those results, there are 66 representatives, 3 directives, and 4 expressives in “Mengenang Taufik Ridlo”. Referring to the results of this research, the most used illocutionary speech acts are representatives. It means the speaker intends to state what he believes the audiences should understand.
