Abstract
Pratiwi, Luh Mutia Maharani, 1709010028, 2021: Realization of
Obligation Meaning of Modality in English and Javanesse: A Case Study in
Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and The Dancer. Undergraduate Thesis for Sarjana
Satra Degree, English Department, Faculty of Letters, University of
Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
The objective of this research are: (1) to analyze the realization of
obligation meaning in The Dancer, (2) to find out how the obligation meaning of
modality is realized in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk.
The researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The data is taken
from Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk novel in English and Javanesse version. The
researcher chooses the dialogue in both novels which contains obligation of
modality.
After analyze the data, the researcher found there are 47 dialogues that
contains of obligation modality which is divided into 26 dialogues in English and
21 dialogues in Javanesse language. There are 17 clauses that categorized as high
degree of obligation, 2 clauses in medium degree of obligation and 0 clauses in
low degree of obligation in The Dancer. In Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk, there are 14
utterances that convey high degree of obligation, two utterances in medium
degree of obligation, and 0 utterances categorized as low values of obligation.
There are 6 metaphorical expressions in The Dancer, while in Ronggeng Dukuh
Paruk it only has two metaphorical expansion of modality. The researcher found
there are similarities in both novels. The researcher found that in both novels,
the common words are have to and kudu. The contrasts that can be found by the
researcher are the differences in the structure level and the use of modal
operators.
