Abstract
Jodi Reza Ramadhani, 1709010016. 2021: Analysis of Visual and Verbal Meaning in Phone Ads Using Semiotic Approach. Undergraduate Thesis for Sarjana Sastra Degree, English Department, Faculty of Letters, University of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. The researcher’s curiosity towards the modern phenomenon of the advancement of technology, the people’s need for technology and how the products are advertised to the mass has led to this analysis. This study aims to analyze the verbal and visual meanings of two smartphone advertisements; OPPO Find X2 Series|Product Introduction and Galaxy S20 Ultra: Official Introduction using a semiotic approach. The semiotic approach is used to determine the denotative and connotative meanings of the advertisements, as well as the visual and verbal meanings of advertisements containing messages from the company to the audience as potential customers. The study will use the qualitative method to collect the visual shots as the primary data and transcription of the ads narration as the secondary data. The other secondary sources, namely journals and articles, as well as several related studies, to give the supporting data for the analysis. Meanwhile, to analyze the ads, semiotic approach will be used. In particular, the discussion will focus these main parts: denotative and connotative meanings of the ads and visual and verbal meanings of the ads that attract the viewers to purchase the products
