Abstract

This research aims to describe the ability to understand mathematical concepts of eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Patikraja viewed from student learning independence. This was a descriptive qualitative research and the samples were taken using a purposive sampling technique. Based on the the learning independence questionnaire ,students were grouped into 3 learning independence, namely high, medium and low learning independence. Three students from each independent learning were taken as respondents. The research data were collected using tests andi nterviews. Then the data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model which included data reduction,data presentation, and conclusions. The results showed that (1) Students with high learning independence met the indicators of concept understanding ability, namely being able to re-explain an understood concept, able to classify objects based on their properties, able to present understood concepts to share mathematical representations, and finally able to solve a problem by applying the concept. (2) Students with learning independence are meeting the indicators of concept understanding ability, namely being able to re-explain a concept that is understood, able to classify objects based on their properties, able to present understood concepts to share mathematical representations. (3) Students with low learning independence meet the indicators of concept understanding ability, namely being able to re-explain a concept that is understood, able to classify objects based on their properties.
