Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to know the types of code
switching which were used by the teachers and to know teachers’ thought
about code switching. This research was conducted at SMP N 2 Sokaraja.
This research used descriptive qualitative approach, and the major
instruments used were observation and interview. There were two English
teachers that involved as participant in this research. Based on the result of
the study, the teachers often used code switching as their strategy in giving
instructions. The code switching types used by teachers were tag code
switching, inter sentential code switching, and intra sentential code
switching. The most frequently used of code switching by the teachers was
intra-sentential code switching. The use of code switching in giving
instructions had big influence toward students understanding about their
teachers’ command. The positive effects were students can learn and get
new vocabulary, students can understand about teachers’ command, code
switching can maintain and engage students’ attention, code switching can
be a conveying tool for achieving teaching and learning goals
