Abstract
Laundry waste is often thrown into the environment without going through
previous processing. While the content in laundry wastewater can pollute the
environment. One way to minimize the content in laundry water is to use
membranes from zeolite and PVA (polyvinyl alcohol). We can know the
performance of the membrane by looking at the value of flux and rejection. The
use of membranes as filters still has fouling problems. Fouling occurs because of
the accumulation of material that is stuck on the membrane. This research was
also conducted to determine the levels of COD and BOD in laundry wastewater
after filtration using PVA membranes. In the application process carried out with
a variation of pressure 3,4,5 bar and the concentration of laundry wastewater
100%, 75%, 50%, 25%. The results showed that the type of PVA membrane was
ultrafiltration with a permeability value of 47.31%, density 1.8 gr / cm3, porosity
of 32.2% and water absorption of 17.91%. Flux decreases with increasing
operating time and the rejection value ranges from 86% - 97%. The type of
fouling at the concentration of laundry wastewater 100%, 50% and 25% is the
cake / layer formation while the concentration of laundry wastewater 75% is
complete blocking. PVA membranes can reduce the COD and BOD content in
laundry water with a decrease in COD ranging from 83.10% - 93.90%; BOD
ranges from 72.75% - 92.06%
