Abstract

This research aimed to describe students' mathematical
communication skills in SMP Negeri 3 Kalibagor viewed from David Kolb's
learning styles. This was a descriptive qualitative research. The research
subjects were the students in grade VIII D, selected using purposive
sampling technique. The students were grouped based on Kolb's types of
learning style; activists, reflectors, theorists, and pragmatists. But in this
study only three types of learning styles can be found. Data were collected
through several techniques such as questionnaires, written tests, interviews,
and documentation. The analysis techniques used were data reduction, data
presentation, and conclusion drawing. Meanwhile triangulation test
technique was employed as a validation test. The research results indicated
that: 1) students with activist learning styles mathematical communication
skills are still less visible from how to restate mathematical problems in the
form of images there are still some that are not right as well as using
symbols in solving a mathematical problem but in giving arguments to a
question or statement has been able to express his argument. 2) students
with reflective learning styles have superior communication skills because,
the three indicators of mathematical communication skills in their
achievement have been fulfilled by a group of reflective learning styles. 3)
students with theoretical learning styles also have mathematical
communication skills that are quite good because they have been able to
solve a problem by using symbols or notations in addition to being able to
provide their arguments appropriately. But in presenting mathematical
problems in the form of images there are still a few that are lacking.
