Abstract

This research was aimed atimproving students‟ speaking skills of second
grade students in XI TAV1 class at SMK YPT 2 Purbalingga in academic year
2013/2014 using peer assessment. The participantsof this research were 36
students of second grade in XI TAV1 at SMK YPT 2 Purbalingga. The research
started from November 6th to November 27th, 2013.This research used Classroom
Action Research. This action research was conducted in two cycles that each cycle
consisted of two actions.In collecting the data, the researcher used qualitative data
and quantitative one. The qualitative data were collected through observation and
questionnaire. The quantitative data were collected through tests (pre-test and
post-test). The result of the research could be seen from the score average that was
47.58 in pre-test, 64.64 in post-test 1, and 76.78 in post-test 2. The number of
studentswho got score more than 73 (KKM) in pre-test was 5.56% and became
25% in post-test 1. Moreover, it improved again into 80.56% in post-test 2. It
reached the criteria of action success which was at least 70% of number of
students‟ of speaking score who reached KKM (73). Then, it was supported by the
observation result and the questionnaire result. The observation result improved
33.85% from cycle 1 to cycle 2. Further, from the questionnaire result showed
90.44% of the students answer “yes”, it means that the students gave positive
responses to the implementation of peer assessment in teaching speaking skill
during the teaching learning process. Based on the result of the research it could
be concluded that the use of peer assessment technique could improve students‟
speaking skills.
